There are three separate questions about a lift, and answering only the first is how moves go wrong.

Is there one. Obvious, and usually answered correctly.

Are household goods permitted in it. Many buildings have a passenger lift that residents may not move furniture in. If that is the position, the job is a staircase job and should be priced as one from the start rather than discovered at eight in the morning.

Will it take your largest items. This is the one that gets missed. A lift can be perfectly serviceable and still be too shallow for a mattress standing on edge, too narrow for a double-door refrigerator, or too short for a wardrobe that does not come apart. When that happens those specific items go down the stairs while everything else rides, which needs more crew than either a pure lift job or a pure staircase job.

So before quoting we ask for the lift's rough internal dimensions, or failing that we look. It takes a minute and it is the difference between a quote that holds and one that gets revised. Where the answer is that two or three large items must take the stairs, we plan for exactly that: the right number of people for those pieces, and the rest moved efficiently by lift.

Everything else is our standard method. Room-by-room packing with our own materials, cartons labelled for the room they are going to at the new address, fragile items wrapped individually and packed so nothing shifts, and wardrobes and beds dismantled where a doorway or a lift will not take them, with the fittings kept together.
