What to expect between pickup and delivery
Long-distance moves feel opaque because the middle is invisible to you. Here is what actually happens.
- Survey and quote. We establish what is moving and where to, then quote against that rather than a guess.
- Packing. Done to the longer-journey standard, cartons numbered and listed.
- Loading and dispatch. The load is built to travel: heavy and rigid low, furniture braced, gaps filled so nothing shifts.
- In transit. The vehicle covers the route. On a shared load, other consignments are handled along the way, which is what widens the delivery window.
- Delivery coordination. We confirm arrival with you before the vehicle reaches the destination, so somebody is there and access is arranged.
- Unloading and placement. Goods go into the rooms marked on them, and furniture is reassembled before the cartons crowd the floor.
Keep your inventory
The numbered list you were given at packing is the thing to check against at delivery. Do it while the crew is still there rather than a day later.
What changes once a move leaves the region
A local shift and an intercity move look similar on paper and behave nothing alike.
On a short run, goods are handled about four times: out of the room, into the vehicle, out of the vehicle, into the room. On a long run that number rises, and the load also spends hours absorbing vibration on the road. Packing has to assume that from the start.
Packing to a different standard
Cartons are filled to be firm rather than heavy. An under-filled carton collapses under whatever is stacked on it; an over-filled one splits at the seam. Fragile items are cushioned between each other, not merely around the outside of the box.
Inventory stops being optional
On a local move you can see both ends of the job in a morning. On a long one you cannot, so cartons are numbered and recorded. Keep that list rather than trusting memory across a week.
Timing is a window, not an hour
Anyone offering a precise arrival time for a long-distance household move is describing an intention. You will be the one waiting when it slips. A window you can plan around is more useful than a promise that cannot be held.
Dedicated vehicle or shared load
This is the decision that most affects an intercity quote, and it is rarely explained properly.

You are buying certainty in one case and saving money in the other. Neither is right in the abstract: it depends on whether you have somewhere to sleep at the far end while you wait.
Whichever you pick, packing is done to the higher standard, because both routes involve more handling than a local move.
Planning the delivery end
The origin is the end you can see. The destination is the one that causes problems, because you may not have been there yet.
Ask the landlord, society or office three questions before the load leaves:
- Which floor, and is there a lift that takes furniture?
- Where can a vehicle stand, and how far is the carry from there?
- Are there hours when goods cannot be brought in?
Those three answers let us plan the delivery rather than improvise it. They are also the most common reason a long-distance move that went smoothly for 400 kilometres loses half a day in the final hundred metres.
If a vehicle is travelling too
Cars and two-wheelers can move on the same job. Say so at the enquiry rather than later, because it changes the plan rather than simply adding a line to the quote. See car and bike transportation for how vehicles are handled.
Commercial moves between cities
Businesses relocating between cities carry the household constraints plus their own.
- Records and equipment need numbering and a documented order, because you cannot reconstruct an archive from memory at the far end.

- Delivery coordination usually needs one named person available at the destination, not a phone number that rings out.
