Packing, Loading and Unloading Services
Not every move needs the full service. If you have transport arranged, or only need the heavy work done, we can handle packing alone, loading alone, or any combination. This page covers the materials and methods we use.

What is included
- Packing using our own materials
- Wrapping and protection for furniture and fragile items
- Labelling so unpacking follows the packing order
- Loading and unloading
- Heavy item handling
What is not included
Stated so there are no surprises on the day.
- Transport, unless booked as part of a full move
- Disposal of packing material after unpacking, unless agreed
What you can pack yourself, and what is better left to us
Partial packing is a sensible way to control cost, provided the split is drawn in the right place.
Usually fine to do yourself: books, clothing, bedding, shoes, toys, linen. Sturdy, low-value, forgiving of imperfect packing.
Better handled properly: the kitchen, glass and mirrors, televisions and screens, anything with a polished surface, and anything you would be genuinely upset to lose. These are where most breakages happen and where good material and technique earn their cost.
If you are packing part of it
- Tell us which part, honestly, so the crew and material are planned around what is left.
- Label by room and fragility, not by contents.
- Do not overfill. A carton that cannot be closed flat cannot be stacked.
- Keep tape on the seams rather than a single strip down the middle.
We would rather add material at the survey than discover a box of unwrapped glassware while loading. There is no judgement in it; it is simply cheaper to fix beforehand.
Materials, and why they are chosen per item
Packing is where a move is won. The materials are not interchangeable, and using the wrong one is how things break.
- Cartons carry books, kitchenware, clothing and small goods. They are filled to be firm, not heavy, and closed so the top can take a stack.
- Bubble and foam wrap protect surfaces that mark: glass, polished wood, screens, mirrors.
- Stretch film binds and dust-proofs wrapped furniture. It protects against rubbing, not against impact.
- Quilted protection goes on mattresses, sofas and large upholstered pieces.
- Corrugated sheeting and timber protect edges and, for genuinely heavy or awkward items, form a crate.
- Labels and tape are part of the material, not an afterthought. An unlabelled carton costs time at both ends.
We bring what the job needs rather than what happens to be on the vehicle, and the material is agreed in advance so it does not become an extra on the day.
Fragile items and the kitchen
The kitchen holds the highest concentration of breakable things and the most awkward shapes, so it is worth describing properly.
Crockery and glass
Plates are wrapped individually and stood on edge, not stacked flat. A plate carries load through its rim and fails through its face, so a flat stack is a column of pressure on the weakest axis. Glasses are wrapped, padded inside where thin-walled, and packed upright with dividers.
Appliances and loose parts
Small appliances go back into their own boxes where you still have them, otherwise they are padded on every face. Mixer jars, blades and glass lids are separated and wrapped individually rather than travelling inside the appliance, where they become a hammer over a long journey.
Mirrors, screens and glass tops
These travel on edge, protected on both faces, and never flat beneath other goods, where a single shifted carton is enough to crack them.
What is better not packed
Cooking oil, liquids, half-used bottles and gas cylinders are best moved by you or disposed of. Tell us if you want them handled and we will advise honestly.
Loading and unloading as a separate service
Not every job needs a full move. If you have transport arranged, or only want the heavy work done, these are normal bookings.
| Booking | What we handle | What you handle |
|---|---|---|
| Packing only | Pack, protect and label everything | Transport and carrying |
| Loading only | Carry, load and secure your vehicle | Packing |
| Unloading only | Unload, carry in and place | Everything before that |
| Packing and loading | Both of the above | Transport |
How a load is built
Heavy and rigid items go in low and first. Furniture is stood and braced rather than laid flat where it can slide. Cartons stack sturdiest at the bottom, fragile on top. Gaps are filled so nothing travels loose, because a load that can shift will shift, and a hundred small movements over a journey do more harm than one heavy brake.
Where damage actually happens
Almost never on the road. It happens on staircases, in doorways, and in the last few metres before the vehicle, and it usually comes down to three causes.
- Too few people. An item needing three hands carried by two gets tilted, and a tilted wardrobe catches a banister. Sizing the crew to the harder end of the job is the cheapest damage prevention there is.
- Rushing the sequence. When furniture is dismantled late, the room is already full of cartons and large items have to be manoeuvred through a crowded floor.
- Loading without a plan. Covered above, and the most avoidable of the three.
Doorframes, banister turns and lift interiors are protected where the route is tight. If something is marked despite all of it, we would rather tell you immediately than have you find it while unpacking.
Packing work supports every other service we run, from house shifting to warehouse and heavy item moving.

Who this suits
- Moves where you have already arranged transport
- Packing help before a self-managed move
- Loading and unloading only
- Heavy or awkward items that need more people
What affects the cost
We do not publish a fixed price, because the same job costs different amounts depending on the details below. Looking at the job first is what turns a guess into a figure that holds.
- How much there is to pack, and how much of it is fragile
- Packing material the contents genuinely require
- Whether you want packing only, loading only, or both
- Floor, lift availability and carry distance
- Number of people the job needs to be done without rushing
- Furniture needing dismantling before it can be moved
- Whether unpacking at the destination is included
What to tell us for a quote
Have these ready and we can usually give you a realistic figure without a second call.
- What you want handled: packing, loading, unloading, or a combination
- Rough size of the home or premises
- How much is fragile, and anything unusually large or valuable
- Floor and lift access, and where a vehicle can stand
- Whether you have transport already arranged
- Your preferred date

Packing, Loading and Unloading: common questions
Can I book packing without transport?
Yes. Packing only, loading only, or unloading only are all normal bookings. Tell us the scope you want and we quote for exactly that.
How do you pack crockery and glass?
Plates are wrapped individually and stood on edge rather than stacked flat, because a plate carries load through its rim and fails through its face. Glasses are wrapped, padded and packed upright with dividers.
Do you unpack at the other end?
Unpacking is available on request. Tell us at the enquiry so it is in the quote rather than agreed on the day.
What should I not put in a carton?
Cooking oil and liquids, gas cylinders, and anything you may need at short notice. Documents, jewellery, medicines and keys should travel with you.
Can I book packing without transport?
Yes. Packing only, loading only, or unloading only are all available. Tell us what you need and we quote for that scope.
What materials do you use?
We use our own packing materials. You can see them in the photographs and video in our gallery.
How are fragile items handled?
Fragile items are wrapped and packed separately, and those cartons are labelled so they are handled and unpacked accordingly.
