There are three kinds of large furniture and they behave completely differently on a moving day.

Modular units are designed to be taken apart and put back together. Wardrobes, beds and storage bought in the last couple of decades usually come apart cleanly, and the work is a known quantity: dismantle, bag and label the fittings, reassemble at the far end. This is the easy case.

Solid-wood furniture often does not dismantle at all, or only partially. An old almirah or a heavy dining table may be one piece by design. It has to go out whole, which makes the doorway, the staircase turn and the lift opening the binding constraint rather than the crew size.

Built-in units were assembled where they stand and were never intended to leave. Sometimes they can be taken apart with care and sometimes taking them apart destroys them. That is a decision for you rather than for a crew on the day, and it needs making before the move, not during it.

So at the survey we walk through the large pieces and establish which category each falls into, what the route out is for anything that will not dismantle, and whether reassembly is wanted at the other end. Reassembly is part of an agreed scope rather than something assumed, so confirm it when you take the quote: it is the most common gap between what a customer expects and what a quote actually covers.

Where an item genuinely cannot be brought out safely, we would rather tell you at the survey than with it wedged halfway. That is a better conversation to have a fortnight early.

Beyond the furniture question, the method is our usual one. Packing runs room by room with our own materials. Cartons are labelled for the room they are going to at the new address rather than the one they came from, because the label is an instruction for whoever carries it. Fragile items are wrapped individually and packed so nothing can shift inside the box, which is what actually prevents breakage rather than the wrapping on its own. Before quoting we establish the floor at each end, whether a working lift is available and whether household goods are permitted in it, how the staircase turns if not, and how close a vehicle can stand. Older buildings and newer ones sit side by side across the western suburbs, so we do not assume from the area which kind you are in.

We do not publish prices. The figure comes from the volume of goods, the floor and lift position at both addresses, how close a vehicle can stand, the packing scope, how much dismantling and reassembly is involved, unusually heavy or awkward items, and the date.

Dismantling is worth calling out because it is genuinely variable here. A household of modular furniture and a household of solid-wood pieces of the same size are not the same job: one is labour at both ends, the other is a route-planning problem and sometimes more crew for a single item. That is why the walk-through matters more than the room count.
