Getting the volume down before the survey. Long-distance moving is priced on the space goods occupy, and every carton you send travels the full distance at your expense. Decluttering matters far more here than on a move across town, and it is the one lever entirely in your hands.

Goods travel for many hours with the vibration that involves, so every void inside a carton is filled, furniture edges are wrapped that would survive a short move untouched, and fragile items are individually protected. A carton packed loosely enough to shift will shift for the whole route.

In practice: crockery bundled and stood on edge rather than stacked flat; glassware upright with paper inside supporting the walls; mirrors, glass tops and screens travelling upright on edge with nothing resting on them; kitchen carton bases double-taped because they are the heaviest in the house. Wardrobes, beds and modular units are dismantled where they will not clear a doorway or a staircase turn, with fittings bagged and kept with the piece. Reassembly at the destination is part of an agreed scope rather than assumed, so settle it while taking the quote. Appliances are prepared properly: a refrigerator defrosted and dried in advance and left standing before being switched on at the far end, and a washing machine drum secured for transit.

The inventory has to be right before loading, because nothing is coming back for a forgotten item. We can survey your current address. We will not have seen the destination, so its access is established by asking rather than assumed: which floor, whether there is a lift and whether household goods are permitted in it, whether it will take a mattress or a large refrigerator, how close a vehicle can stand, and what hours the building allows shifting work. Those answers let the unloading be planned instead of improvised after a long drive.
