A piece of furniture has to clear every point between where it stands and where the vehicle is. Any one of them can stop it, and the narrowest is rarely the one people expect.

The doorway of the room itself, including the frame rather than the opening, because the frame is what the item actually touches.

The main door and any lobby door. Two doors close together are worse than one narrow door, because a long item cannot be angled between them.

The staircase turn. This is the one that catches people. A straight flight will take almost anything; a half-landing turn has a diagonal that is often shorter than the flight is wide, and that diagonal is the real constraint.

The lift, if goods are permitted in it. Internal depth, width and door opening, and the diagonal if the ceiling allows tilting. A lift that comfortably takes a fridge may not take a mattress standing on edge.

The route to the vehicle. Gates, bollards, a ramp, a low overhang.

Against that we measure the large items: wardrobes, beds, sofas, dining tables, a fridge, a washing machine, and anything mounted. Two numbers each, the largest dimension and the one that cannot be reduced by tilting.

It takes fifteen minutes and it converts the biggest unknown on a moving day into a known quantity. Everything that follows, the crew size, the sequence and the price, is more accurate for it.

There are three answers and they are worth knowing in advance, because two of them need a decision from you rather than from a crew.

It comes apart. Most modular furniture does, and once dismantled almost anything clears a normal doorway. Fittings are bagged and kept with the piece so reassembly is not guesswork. This is the ordinary outcome.

It comes apart partially, or with risk. Some solid-wood and older furniture can be taken down but does not always go back together as tightly, and a few pieces were assembled in place and were never meant to leave. That is a decision for you: whether the piece is worth the risk. We will tell you what we think will happen, and we would rather have that conversation at the survey than with the item wedged on a landing.

It does not come out at all. Rare, but real, and almost always a large solid item in an older building with a tight turn. Where that is the case we say so plainly rather than attempting it and damaging both the piece and the building. Knowing a fortnight ahead gives you options: selling it, gifting it, or planning differently. Knowing on the morning gives you none.

Packing goes room by room with our own materials. Cartons are labelled for the room they are going to at the new address rather than the one they came from, because the label is an instruction for whoever carries it. Fragile items are wrapped individually and packed so nothing can shift inside the box, which is what actually prevents breakage rather than the wrapping alone. Where the vehicle stands matters as much as where it can reach. In older streets the honest answer is sometimes a longer carry from wherever it can legally and safely wait, and sometimes a smaller vehicle to the door with more than one run. Neither is a compromise; both are normal, and both are priced before you agree rather than raised on the day. If a mover has not asked how close a vehicle can park, they have not priced your move yet.

The figure comes from the volume of goods, the floor at each end and whether a working lift is available and permitted for household goods, how close a vehicle can stand, the packing scope, how much dismantling and reassembly is involved, unusually heavy or awkward items, the distance, and the date.

Dismantling is worth singling out here, because it varies more than people expect. A household of modular furniture and a household of solid-wood pieces of the same size are not the same job: one is straightforward labour at both ends, the other is a route-planning problem and occasionally more crew for a single item. That is exactly why the walk-through matters more than the room count.

Household shifting is priced on the space goods occupy rather than their weight, so anything sold, given away or disposed of before the survey is space you do not pay to move. It is the one lever entirely in your hands.
